Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) has entered a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Department of Rural Development (DoRD), Ministry of Rural Development, Government of India, to jointly promote LIC’s flagship initiative, the Bima Sakhi Yojana, across rural areas.
The agreement was formalised during the National Conclave on Financial Inclusion, ‘Anubhuti’, held from July 8 to 10, 2025, in Goa.
The Bima Sakhi Yojana is a unique initiative by LIC aimed exclusively at empowering women by creating career opportunities in the insurance distribution sector. The scheme offers women a structured, performance-based agency role with all the privileges and benefits available to regular LIC agents. The initiative is designed to provide women with long-term financial independence, while also strengthening the penetration of insurance services in underserved rural markets.
Under the scheme, women appointed as Bima Sakhis are entitled to receive monthly stipends during the first three years of their agency tenure, Rs 7,000 in the first year, Rs 6,000 in the second year, and Rs 5,000 in the third year, subject to fulfilment of specified performance criteria and terms. This financial support serves as an added incentive for rural women to establish a sustainable career in insurance distribution.
The MoU signifies a strategic partnership between LIC and the Ministry, aligning the goals of the Deendayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Rural Livelihood Mission (DAY-NRLM) with the objectives of the Bima Sakhi Yojana.
Both initiatives share a common vision of enhancing rural livelihoods and improving household incomes, particularly through women’s empowerment and financial inclusion.
This collaboration is expected to play a significant role in driving awareness, reach, and adoption of life insurance in remote and rural regions of the country. By leveraging the extensive rural network and livelihood support structure under DAY-NRLM, LIC aims to extend the benefits of insurance coverage and simultaneously support rural women in building a meaningful and financially rewarding career.
The MoU between LIC and the Department of Rural Development marks a significant step toward inclusive development and showcases the power of institutional partnerships in transforming rural India.
