Bandhan Bank has announced the appointment of Biju E Punnachalil as its Chief Risk Officer (CRO) for a tenure of three years.
Punnachalil succeeds Sundeep Bhan, who stepped down from the interim CRO role upon Punnachalil’s joining. The change forms part of the bank’s ongoing efforts to strengthen its senior management team and enhance its enterprise-wide risk governance framework.
Punnachalil brings over three decades of banking experience to Bandhan Bank, with deep expertise across risk management, treasury operations, retail banking and branch operations. He most recently served as Chief Risk Officer at South Indian Bank for more than eight years, where he led the development and implementation of policies covering credit, market and operational risk.
During his tenure, he shaped the institution’s risk appetite, aligned internal controls with regulatory requirements and fostered a culture of robust governance across all business verticals.
Punnachalil began his banking career in 1993 at Federal Bank, gaining hands-on experience in branch operations and customer servicing. In 1996, he joined South Indian Bank to manage frontline branch activities before transitioning to its Treasury function in 2000.
There, he oversaw interest rate and liquidity risk management, contributed to asset-liability management strategies and collaborated extensively with regulatory authorities to translate evolving mandates into actionable frameworks. His academic credentials include a Master of Science and a Bachelor of Science in Physics from Mahatma Gandhi University, Kerala.
