The Assam government has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the National Stock Exchange (NSE) to roll out a student-centric skilling programme focused on the banking, financial services and insurance (BFSI) sector. The agreement was formalised during a summit held on Wednesday.
With this collaboration, Assam has become the fourth state to join hands with NSE for youth skill development, following the footsteps of Uttarakhand, Meghalaya and Chhattisgarh. Supported by the state government, the programme aims to equip students with industry-relevant knowledge and competencies in the BFSI sector, boosting their employment potential while fostering entrepreneurship.
The initiative aligns closely with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Assam’s broader vision of promoting skill development as a driver of economic growth. By addressing the existing skill gap in the financial services sector, the programme seeks to prepare students for promising careers in BFSI.
Speaking on the occasion, Assam’s Minister for Higher Education, School Education and Tribal Affairs, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, underscored the importance of the initiative. He stated, “This collaboration is a significant step towards establishing Assam as a BFSI hub in the Northeast, securing better career opportunities and economic prosperity for our youth.”
NSE’s Chief Business Development Officer, Sriram Krishnan, also highlighted Assam’s unique position and potential in nurturing BFSI talent.
He said, “Assam’s strategic location and growing financial ecosystem make it an ideal ground to cultivate the next generation of BFSI professionals.”
The state’s financial landscape has witnessed growth in investor participation, rising from 0.7 per cent in 2019 to 2.3 per cent in 2024. Assam also ranks fifth nationally in female investor participation, with women accounting for 29.8 per cent of the state’s total investors.
The Assam-NSE partnership marks a critical milestone in the state’s journey towards creating a skilled workforce ready to thrive in the evolving financial services industry.
