Tier-III Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) have emerged as the strongest performers in terms of financial indicators such as deposits, advances, and total assets, as of 31st March, 2024, despite accounting for only 78 of the total 1,472 Urban Cooperative Banks (UCBs) in India.
Data from the Reserve Bank of India shows that Tier-III UCBs contributed Rs 1.93 lakh crore in deposits, representing 34.76 per cent of the sector’s total. Their advances stood at Rs 1.16 lakh crore (33.48 per cent), while total assets reached Rs 2.39 lakh crore (33.81 per cent), surpassing all other categories.
While Tier-I UCBs form the majority with 850 banks (57.74 per cent), and Tier-II includes 538 banks, it is the Tier-III group that has shown the highest financial concentration.
Tier-II banks followed with 30.79 per cent of deposits and 29.83 per cent of total advances. Meanwhile, the smallest group—only six Tier-IV UCBs—managed to hold deposits of Rs 1.27 lakh crore and advances worth Rs 85,420 crore, showcasing their high individual capacity.
Across all categories, UCBs collectively accounted for Rs 5.55 lakh crore in deposits, Rs 3.46 lakh crore in advances, and Rs 7.08 lakh crore in total assets.
