The government today sent an emergency alert to smartphones across India to test pan-India emergency alert system being implemented by the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA).
“This is a SAMPLE TESTING MESSAGE sent through Cell Broadcasting System by Department of Telecommunication, Government of India. Please ignore this message as no action is required from your end. This message has been sent to test Pan-India Emergency Alert System being implemented by National Disaster Management Authority. It aims to enhance public safety and provide timely alerts during emergencies,” read the alert.
The message also mentioned the date and time, along with a number having (#) symbol.
In July, the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) had announced that it will work with NDMA to test the Cell Broadcast Alert System in order to improve emergency communication during catastrophes and guarantee the safety and well-being of citizens. Tests of the Cell Broadcast Alert System are being carried out on each telecom service provider.
